What does EKhB mean?

EKhB represents the Russian initials ЕХБ, short for евангельские христиане-баптисты: Evangelical Christians-Baptists. You may encounter the term in the name of a church, a union of churches, or a discussion of a shared religious history.

The name is used beyond one country. For example, the Baptist World Alliance lists an All-Ukrainian Union of Evangelical Christians-Baptists. Its Ukrainian abbreviation is ЄХБ. The similar letters refer to the same words in different languages; neither abbreviation, by itself, identifies a particular congregation's membership in a union.

What do the words tell you?

“Evangelical Christians” points to a Christian tradition centered on the gospel; “Baptists” names a family of churches associated with baptism following a person's own profession of faith. The Baptist World Alliance belief statement describes believers' baptism by immersion. Our article about the Baptist name explains that practice in more detail.

Does EKhB describe every Russian-speaking Baptist church?

No. A congregation may share a language and some traditions without using this abbreviation or belonging to the same church union. A name on a website can tell you how a church describes itself; it cannot substitute for the church's own explanation of its beliefs and affiliations. If that distinction matters to you, ask the congregation directly.
