Where did Baptists begin?

The Baptist movement took shape among English Christians in the early seventeenth century. Its early history runs through Amsterdam and back to England.

The Baptist World Alliance identifies a congregation formed in Amsterdam in 1609 as the first Baptist congregation. It grew from a group of English religious dissenters associated with John Smyth and Thomas Helwys. Helwys and some members later returned to England, where a Baptist congregation was established in 1612.

Why Amsterdam?

The English group left home amid religious pressure and found refuge in the Netherlands. A Baptist–Mennonite historical dialogue dates their move to 1607. In Amsterdam they discussed what it meant for a church to consist of people who professed faith for themselves, including how baptism related to that profession. Dutch Mennonites welcomed the group, but the two traditions should not be treated as identical.

What happened after the return to England?

Helwys's group returned in 1612. Other Baptist congregations developed in England, and they did not all come from a single congregation. A Baptist World Alliance historical report distinguishes the line associated with Smyth and Helwys, later called General Baptists, from the separate emergence of Particular Baptists. These are historical names for different streams within the movement, not labels a visitor needs to memorize before attending church.

Did Baptists start in America?

No. Baptist churches later grew in North America, but the organized movement's early history is European. The dates above describe the Baptist tradition, not the beginning of Christianity. They also do not imply that one person founded every Baptist church that exists today.

What does this history tell a visitor in the Orlando area?

It explains the background of a tradition, but not every practice of a present-day congregation.
