Are Baptists Protestants?

Yes. Baptist churches belong to the broad Protestant tradition within Christianity. The word “Protestant” tells you something about their history, though it does not tell you everything about a particular church.

A Baptist World Alliance dialogue with Reformed churches places both traditions in the same Protestant stream. A separate Baptist–Methodist historical report describes Baptists as a Protestant denomination that emerged among English Christians in the seventeenth century. “Baptist” identifies a more specific family within that wider category.

Does “Protestant” mean all these churches teach the same thing?

No. Protestant traditions differ over baptism and the organization of a church. Baptist statements emphasize baptism following a person's own profession of faith. The Baptist World Alliance belief statement describes believers' baptism by immersion. Our article on the Baptist name explains why that practice became closely associated with this tradition.

Where does Baptist history begin?

The early Baptist movement took shape among English dissenters in Amsterdam and England. Its beginnings came after the sixteenth-century Reformation, but Baptists were not founded by Martin Luther. Our history article follows the early congregations and gives the dates and sources.

What should a visitor ask a local church?

A historical label is a starting point. Ask the congregation how it explains the Bible, baptism and membership in its own words. Spasenie Church is listed by the Greater Orlando Baptist Association among its member churches in Winter Park. That listing identifies an affiliation; it does not replace a conversation with the church about its teaching or services.
