How did Evangelical Christian-Baptist communities develop?

Their history took shape across several regions. In the nineteenth century, Baptist and evangelical Christian communities emerged in places that now belong to different countries. A single national story leaves much of that history out.

The European Baptist Federation's timeline traces the spread of Baptist churches across Europe in the nineteenth century. It notes a Baptist church established in Hamburg in 1834 and the baptism of Nikita Voronin in Tiflis, now Tbilisi, in 1867. These are points on a wider timeline, not the history of just one present-day country.

Why are there different starting points?

It depends on which part of the story is being told. The early Baptist movement, the arrival of Baptist communities in a particular region, and the later development of Evangelical Christian-Baptist churches are related but distinct subjects. Our article on the earlier beginnings of Baptists explains the English and Amsterdam background separately.

What does this history tell us about churches today?
